Open letter to MPs The Legislative Assembly St.-Petersburg, Leningrad region and public associations of the region on the issue of nuclear dumping in Sosnovy Bor

The State Corporation Rosatom plans to build item disposal of radioactive waste (CDEP) in the town of Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad region. Voluntary environmental organizations, area residents and local authorities are concerned about the prospect of nuclear burial ground near their house.

Dear deputies of Legislative Assembly!

The State Corporation Rosatom plans to build item disposal of radioactive waste (CDEP) in the town of Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad region. Voluntary environmental organizations, area residents and local authorities are concerned about the prospect of nuclear burial ground near their house.

Nuclear burial ground is designed for 250 thousand tons. However, the final capacity is still not clearly marked. Nevertheless, based on the stated storage volumes in the pine forest will take waste from across the country.

The two neighbouring regions threatens ecological disaster. Problem with the city of St. Petersburg, is in proximity to the Baltic Sea and transit of radioactive cargoes through its territory. A huge number of Petersburgers rests in the Leningrad region, thousands of people have cottages and large families receive plots in the region. City food market is saturated with products of the regional production. All this suggests that the problem of the disposal of nuclear waste is common in the Leningrad region and St. Petersburg.

As a resident of the Leningrad region and as a member of the State Duma Committee on natural resources, environment and ecology, beg to oppose construction of CDEP in the North-Western region. I am sure that the most tragic consequences of the construction of the burial ground are causing irreparable harm to residents, as well as environmental pollution.

I hope for your support of the Declaration, which will be sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin. I believe that the joint signing of the document against the construction of the CDEP will be the beginning of a dialogue of public organizations and initiative groups with the executive authorities. I am confident that this move will encourage the parties to a productive cooperation and adoption of Community decisions.

With kind regards,
Deputy Of State Duma
Russian Federation Nikolay Kuzmin
